Being weaned is not so great

I very much enjoy my days at the Okaukuejo Camp in the Etosha National Park and whenever there is time, I try to sit at the waterhole and observe the animals that come and go.

Today I had an interesting giraffe sighting. A mom (I think) and subadult came along to get some water. Giraffes are usually very suspicious when it comes to drinking as they are very vulnerable in that position. So they came slowly closer and stopped from time to time to evaluate the situation and assure that no danger is around.

The young one. It also was thirsty and tried to get some milk from its mother. But the poor little one … its mother constantly refused to let it drink. Whenever it approached, the mom went away.

Eventually it found an opportunity while she was quenching her own thirst.

I am not exactly sure what happened here. Maybe it was not the mother but most probably it was just time to wean the youngster.

Good night,
Sininho

    1. Thank you.

Indeed. The waterholes here are special and allow us an incredible insight into the animals habit and to “be part” of their lives, even just for a short time.
