The Invasion of the Red-billed Queleas

They came somehow overnight. One morning, while having my first coffee outside my room, I heard this loud “wush” above me but could not figure out immediately where it came from. Only seconds later I heard it again and saw a flock of birds above me, heading towards the waterhole. Red-billed queleas! When they came in small groups first, those flocks became bigger and bigger over the next days until eventually it was only one immense mass of about millions of birds flying in early morning to drink at the waterhole and again late afternoon to find their roosting spot. It is incredibly spectacular to listen to and watch them.

After some weeks, the dam is not only full of the birds, but also of their feathers that they loose during while flying in and out. Such a mess 😊

These only about 12 cm small birds are considered the most abundant bird species on earth, but I was not aware that they are all here at CCF …

Good night,
Sininho
