It started slowly and sluggishly but I think I am nearly done with the collection of the most important things I need for the upcoming year in southern Africa. I always have a hard time when it comes to get ready for any type of journey, no matter if it is for vacation or business, I regularly carry too much stuff with me. Now I need to prepare for a year. ONE YEAR! I really can´t belive it and sometimes (actually most of the times) ask myself, what did I think when “booking” this!!
For the last weeks of my preparation, I mostly concentrated on clothes and equipment. Things like khaki-coloured shirts, binoculars, foldable water bottles, and other tools we will need in the bush. Luckily, I got a checklist that I could work through. But now – two weeks prior to leaving – I more and more start collecting moments and memories. Those things that I can take with me but I cannot have them there. Like the last ice cream in my favorite ice cream shop, the last coffee with a friend, the last music session in the pub around the corner, the last cuddle with the cat or last lunch with the colleagues. Those moments weight light in my suitcase but are the heaviest ones at the same time. I know it sounds sentimental and as if I would leave forever – what I am not doing. I am “just” on an awesome one year adventure. My life goes on, everyone elses life goes on. But still, it makes me emotional and I am very happy to deeply feel, enjoy and value those “last things”. And the good thing is: in only about 360 days I will be back and I am looking forward to then having some “first” things to experience 🙂
