Northern Black Korhaan

DESCRIPTION
This about 50 cm tall bird has a black head with white throat, brown eyes and red bill. The back is brown.
Long yellow legs. Often seen standing on an elevated point such as termite mounds. There are ground-dwelling birds found in woodland and open grassland areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

Very distinctive “kraak kraak” call when on ground or in flight.

The Black korhaan is usually found solitary. There is no evidence that males and females bond permanently.
DIET
The Northern Black Korhaan is omnivorous and feeds on insects, small reptiles such as lizards, geckos, bush snakes, fruits and seeds.
REPRODUCTION AND LIFECYCLE
The bird builds its nest directly on the ground, sometimes with figs, straw and leaves. The nest is placed under a bush to protect the young from predators.

Fledging: 4-5 weeks
