Lions @ Gemsbokvlakte

Yesterday, I went out for an afternoon drive to Gemsbokvlakte which usually is a reliable spot to observe all kind of antelopes and jackals, and sometimes even a rhino comes around.

This time, only a few zebras were standing around. Interesting enough … one was licking at a a rock … “Geophagia”, eating soil, is often practised by antelopes to retrieve minerals lack in their diet, such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, or iron.

I decided to directly go further to Ombika, another waterhole and good spot to find elephants, when I saw a Bateleur at the waterhole so turned to watch it for a while.

While doing so, I noticed that the few zebras were all staring in a specific direction and did not even turn their head when I was arriving.. Very suspicious I thought … alarmed antelopes, and a bateleur … that could be signs for predators around, if not a kill! I did not even finish my thought when these two came out of the bush.

What a presence and what a pleasure to watch these food-pregnant brothers coming to the waterhole. They were later joined by their females and hang around for quite a while.

I unfortunately had to leave to be back in camp before the gate closed.

The next day I came back to this place and can you believe? Two of the lions were still there, hiding behind the water tank. They gave me a bit of a derogative look (obviously were crossed that I found them) but finally relaxed and did what lions do … sleeping!

Good night,
Sininho
