On track#1 – Spoors in the mud …

One of the things I like to do on my evening walks is finding and identifying tracks. They give you an idea, what animal has been around and what it was doing. It is sometimes quite easy to identify a track, sometimes it is nearly a forensic journey.

Today I have been lucky. We still have some waterholes around but due to the hot days we had the last weeks, they are drying up now but leave some kind of muddy surroundings , which is great for tracking as this type of underground easily preserves the spoors.

Let the search begin:

Alright, let´s have a closer look:

Hm, these are antelope tracks, that is clear. But which ones. I am not too sure if kudu or oryx because both of them I often see around. After a closer look into my tracker´s manual, I go for gemsbok (oryx). Kudu looks definitely different, they would be much smaller and less heart-shaped.

Looks like mongoose tracks?

Although nocturnal and not often seen, the aardvark cannot deny his presence. Nice!

And finally I am delighted to find this clear honeybadger spoor!

Okay, I could not identify all of the tracks I found. At least not without the help of my books. But practice makes the master and I am curious what I will see find next time.

Good night,
Sininho
