Mashatu – The Arrival

Today we travelled a looong way from Selati in South Africa to Mashatu in Botswana. Eight hours in a bus, puh! But we finally made it across the border ant into the Tuli Reserve.

At the border, we were picked up by our new instructors Tayla and Rentia and had now only another hour towards our camp. On the way, it was great to see the beautiful landscape and also some of the animals.

I fell in love with Mashatu straight away. The reserve is part of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and located in the easternmost corner of Botswana, next to South Africa and also bordering Zimbabwe.

Right at the entrance of our camp, and beside our lecture room, a massive Nyala tree was welcoming us, ready to provide a shady spot during the hot summer days. This will for sure be my favourite place to study or to watch the birds that come to the drinking station which was provided to them.

The facilities like bathroom and toilets are basic but nice. My roommate and I are lucky, and we have a tent far away from the centre of the camp, so the nights will probably be quieter than they have been in Selati.

And we have wildlife directly in the camp. Not so cuddly but very affectionate. Millipedes are one of my favourite animals and I get used to put my hand in their way, so they walk over it which is a very funny feeling. I try to stop myself though, to disturb them as few as possible, but sometimes I cannot resist. But I never pick them up with my hands and always place them back so they can continue their mission.

The camp is next to a river. In our case – a riverbed. No water in there after the last months of drought and therefore the perfect spot for a volleyball field, and a stunning atmosphere at sunset. I guess I found my spot for the mornings to watch the sunrise with a good cup of coffee!

Alright, so far so good. I am very excited about the reserve now. From what I saw on our way, it is stunning. I will keep you informed.

Good night,
Sininho
